For this Assignment, you will identify a public health issue (topic) and a target population from within your community. Misty Wood According to Langberg, those who suffer from trauma can go to extremes of remembering and forgetting and after the initial symptoms subside – forgetting is usually how the victim deals with trauma long-term (Langberg, 2001). Additionally, victims deal with memories in regards to feelings and senses, not in narratives of what happened but instead what they experienced, how they felt, what they smelled (Langberg, 2001). Since they do not simply re-tell what happened, but tell with emotion and senses, a person can often find themselves right back in the traumatic situation by re-experiencing the trauma. Langberg states that if the victim finds themselves re-experiencing, (having a flashback) it is important to reassure them that they are having a normal response and that they are safe (Langberg, 2001). Because PTSD symptoms often turn from intrusion (reliving) to constriction (amnesia – all or just gaps in memory), it may seem that the victim is better; however, Langberg warns that in fact they have entered into numbness (flat) with no emotion at all (Langberg, 2001). It is important to ask the right questions but more important to really listen. “Trauma leads to silence, isolation and helplessness”, (Langberg, 2001, 05:15) so understanding the difference between PTSD and other mental issues such as depression and anxiety is a must. To complicate things further many of the PTSD symptoms will also be linked to other mental disturbances. Langberg states that the trauma must be dealt with because one can rarely move on successfully without proper treatment (Langberg, 2001). As stated before, the victim can move from intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and nightmares to amnesia in either the entire trauma or parts of the trauma; however, these issues can quickly resurface when one faces a trigger of the particular trauma and once again they are re-experiencing (Langberg, 2001). Also, it is well known that those who do not seek help often choose to numb their pain by alcohol and non-prescription drugs which can lead to a multitude of problems with work, family and social settings. Langberg urges the church to help those in need and not to think they are better when the appearance of the initial symptoms subside (Langberg, 2001). Understanding God’s word and knowing how to incorporate prayer and scripture into counseling settings (with the counselee’s consent) can be extremely beneficial, as many have guilt or other issues surrounding the trauma that may make them feel disconnected from God. One such scripture is found in Psalms, “he sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave (Psalm 107: 20, NIV). Student 2. Angela Wright Memory can be affected by trauma in various ways and range from one end of the spectrum to the other. Some victims re-experience the trauma repeatedly in their thoughts while others are unable to remember anything (Langberg, 2001). These two differing responses are defined as intrusion and constriction (Langberg, 2001), The two very different responses can present in one victim. Due to this pendulum swing in emotions many victims can experience unpredictability and chaos as time goes on (Langberg,2001). Traumatic memories can persist for years after the tragedy has actually occurred. Victims often experience an inability to verbalize their exact feelings. Four types of memories are indicative of trauma according to Langberg; sensory memory, anguished memory, emotional memory and humiliated memory (2001). Sensory memory involves the 5 senses touch,smell,hearing,sight and also taste. Emotional memory involves the person recalling how they felt at the time of the incident such as extreme fear. Split memory also referred to as anguished memory describes life in a before and after approach ie ” before this happened” or “after it happened” (Langberg,2001). The last form of memory Langberg describes is humiliated memory. This is described as the feeling the victim has when they feel things could have been different if their actions were. PTSD is often misinterpreted due to clinicians not receiving a full picture of what is going on. Victims tend to minimize their symptoms and focus on one particular thing (Lyles, 2001). Co-morbid symptoms often take presidence over the true underlying problem of PTSD especially in the Christian population. Surface issues become the focal point of prayer rather than delving into the abyss of the root cause. PTSD must be treated because it is not something that will go away with avoidance. People suffer in silence and the disease evolves which can lead to severe depression, suicide and even homicide. Many people feel if the drastic symptoms diminish the person is cured when constriction is actually occurring. Untreated PTSD can lead to substance abuse and family erosion (Lyles, 2001). Providing an environment and program that can produce behavioral change for PTSD victims is imperative for long term functioning and recovery. Patience in this situation is necessary for both patient and helper.
