What Is Expository Writing?
Expository writing is a type of writing that is used to explain, inform, or describe a subject to the reader. It is a way to present information in a clear, organized manner, and it is often used in academic writing. Expository writing is different from other types of writing, such as creative writing or persuasive writing, because it is focused on providing information rather than telling a story or trying to persuade the reader to take a particular action. In expository writing, the writer’s goal is to provide a clear and accurate explanation of a topic, using evidence and examples to support their arguments. The writer should use clear and concise language and should present their ideas in a logical and organized manner. Expository writing is commonly used in academic settings, such as in essays, research papers, and lab reports. It is also used in business and technical writing, such as in instructions, manuals, and reports. Overall, the purpose of expository writing is to inform the reader and to provide a clear and accurate understanding of a topic.
Expository Essay
An expository essay is a type of essay that is designed to explain, inform, or describe a subject to the reader. It is a way to present information in a clear, organized manner, and it is often used in academic writing. Here is a general outline of how to write an expository essay:
- Choose a topic: The first step in writing an expository essay is to choose a topic that you are interested in and that you know enough about to write about.
Choosing a topic that you are interested in and that you know enough about is important because it will help you to write a more engaging and informative essay. Additionally, having a good understanding of the topic will allow you to provide your readers with accurate and reliable information. It’s also a good idea to choose a topic that is not too broad or too narrow. A topic that is too broad may be difficult to cover fully in the length of your essay, while a topic that is too narrow may not have enough information available to write about. Lastly, it’s a good idea to choose a topic that is relevant and timely. This will help to make your essay more interesting and engaging for your readers.
- Do research: Once you have chosen a topic, you will need to do some research to gather information about it. This will involve using various sources, such as books, articles, and websites.
Doing research is an important step in the writing process because it helps you to gather information about your topic and to understand it more deeply.
There are many different types of sources that you can use for research, including books, articles, websites, and more. It’s important to use a variety of sources in order to get a well-rounded understanding of your topic and to provide a balanced perspective in your essay.
When doing research, it’s also important to be careful to choose reliable and trustworthy sources. This may involve evaluating the credibility of the sources and making sure that they are from reputable sources.
Finally, be sure to take good notes and to keep track of your sources so that you can cite them properly in your essay. This will help to ensure that your essay is well-researched and credible.
- Organize your information: After you have gathered all of your information, you will need to organize it in a logical and cohesive manner. This may involve creating an outline, which will help you to structure your essay and ensure that it flows well.
Yes, organizing your information is an important step in the writing process because it helps you to see the overall structure of your essay and to make sure that your ideas are well-organized and flow smoothly.
One way to organize your information is to create an outline. An outline is a tool that helps you to organize your ideas and to plan the structure of your essay. It is a way to visually organize your thoughts and to see how they fit together.
To create an outline, you can start by writing down your main ideas or points. Then, you can add sub points or supporting details under each main idea. This will help you to see the overall structure of your essay and to make sure that your ideas are logically organized.
It’s also a good idea to include transitions between your main ideas and sub points in your outline. This will help to ensure that your essay flows smoothly and is easy to follow.
Finally, be sure to revise your outline as needed as you continue to research and write your essay. This
- Write your essay: Once you have your information organized, you can begin writing your essay. Start with an introduction that captures the reader’s attention and introduces the main topic of your essay. Then, provide your main points in the body of the essay, using evidence and examples to support your arguments. Finally, conclude your essay by summarizing your main points and restating your thesis.
Once you have your information organized and your outline complete, you can begin writing your essay.
The introduction is the first paragraph of your essay and its main purpose is to introduce your topic to the reader and to provide some background information on the subject. The introduction should capture the reader’s attention and make them want to keep reading.
After the introduction, you should provide your main points in the body of the essay. Each main point should be supported by evidence and examples, which will help to make your argument more convincing. Be sure to use clear and concise language and to organize your ideas in a logical manner.
The conclusion is the last paragraph of your essay and its main purpose is to summarize your main points and to restate your thesis. The conclusion should not introduce any new ideas, but rather should provide a summary of the main points that you have already discussed in the body of your essay.
Overall, it’s important to remember to use clear and concise language, to provide evidence to support your arguments, and to follow a logical and well-organized structure in your essay.
- Edit and proofread: After you have finished writing your essay, be sure to edit and proofread it carefully to ensure that it is error-free and well-written. This will involve checking for spelling and grammar errors, as well as making sure that your essay is well-organized and flows smoothly.
Editing and proofreading your essay is an important step in the writing process because it helps to ensure that your essay is error-free and well-written.
When editing your essay, be sure to check for any spelling or grammar errors, as well as any typos or other mistakes. It can also be helpful to read your essay out loud to help you catch any mistakes that you might have missed.
In addition to checking for errors, it’s also important to make sure that your essay is well-organized and flows smoothly. This may involve rearranging sentences or paragraphs, or adding transitions between ideas.
Finally, don’t forget to proofread your essay carefully. Proofreading involves reading through your essay carefully to catch any remaining mistakes that you might have missed during the editing process.
Overall, the editing and proofreading process is important because it helps to ensure that your essay is of high quality and that it presents your ideas clearly and effectively.

Question 631 Research Paper and Project
All students are required to write a traditional research paper on a narrow topic of your own choice. Once you have decided upon a topic I would strongly recommend you begin gathering materials for the assignment at some earlier point in the semester rather than waiting until week 14 to begin. The paper should relate to themes in the course but could literally be about anything you find interesting, regarding the historical practice of faith, theological or philosophical issue of belief (or disbelief), sociologically influenced religious practice, or even a contemporary movement. It could be about an individual, a group, a scripture, a specific devotion, an event, a phenomena, but should not be of a general nature such as “The History of Islam” or “The Story of Buddhism”. Also try to refrain from writing about well-known topics very common to your own faith such as “The Seven Sacraments”, “The Five Pillars”, “The Life of Christ”, “The Prophet Muhammad” or “The Ten Commandments”. You could however write a more narrow well-researched paper about one particular commandment, a pillar, a sacrament, or an event from the life of a religion’s founder. If you are unsure about your choice of a topic feel free to run it by me. The paper should be a minimum of 7 pages (it certainly can be much longer), utilizing at least 5 sources. Inclusion of primary sources such as the scriptures, or the first-hand accounts (theories, history, philosophy) of an historical individual to support your position are always encouraged. You may use any academic writing style that you are comfortable with (MLA, Chicago Manual, APA, SCI, etc.). Project ————————- 10 % Each student is also required to complete a “project” (of sorts) which will be summarized in a 5-10 page written essay. The project can be on any a topic of your choice. This may include reading a book (scholarly, spiritual, historical or fictional) or viewing a movie with a religious theme and writing a reflection coupled with a modest amount of research or historical/critical reflection. It could be a review of a religious piece of art, a reflection on a visit to a worship space, monastery, shrine, reading room, mosque or temple. This may not be a place you regularly attend, have visited during a previous quarter, or an assignment you have done for some other course. The project might also involve an account of your visit to a worship service (other than your own faith) coupled with some preliminary research, or an interview with a person of another faith. All projects must move beyond a mere summary of the experience or readings to an integration and dialogue of the material with course-related themes, questions or issues. Please include some sort of bibliography with your work.
Question 632 Religion
Reflective Paper ou can write on anything from the chapter. But it has to have some connection to the reading. Here are some possible questions to get you started. Do not try to answer them all. Evaluate the authors’ definition of religion. Are such secular worldviews such as Marxism religions? How would you define religion? Remember that your answer has to show evidence of having read the chapter. So you are not just to answer the question simply based on your own thoughts.

Describe the spirits of the dead. What role do they have in the lives of the living in particular religions? How are the beliefs about the dead reflected in religious practice? 3. What are the three main ways African religions communicate with the supernatural? Describe each. 4. What influence have African religions had on American religions? How did this happen? 5. Question 634 How often do you engage with or witness death in your work
I need this two question separated with 200 words each one and the references in APA style. 1-) How often do you engage with or witness death in your work? How has this experience or the lack of it shaped your view of death? Has it gotten easier or harder for you to accept the fact of death? As you explain, include your clinical specialty. 2-) Reflect on the analysis of the sin of suicide and thus, euthanasia from the topic readings. Do you agree? Why or why not? Refer to the lecture and topic readings in your response.
Question 635 The Appearance of the sacred
please read instructions** My faith and beliefs in GOD are sacred Give examples of what is sacred in your life. Give examples of sacred not mentioned in the book. Why are those people/places/things sacred? Remember, just because something is “special” to you, or important to you, does not mean that it’s sacred. There is a unique definition for sacred. To be sacred, a person/place/thing has to meet a specific criteria. Is there actual power in the sacred places/objects, or is it just a matter of faith/superstition/ psychology? Don’t just rehash what we talked about last week. And use the readings in the chapter to base your ideas on. Remember, don’t try to answer all of these questions. I would rather have you explore a topic deeply than to try to talk about everything. And, these questions are just examples to help you get started. If there is something else in the chapter that really interests you, then explore that. But you have to reflect on the readings, not just the idea of the sacred in your own mind.
Question 636 religion assignment
Discuss the message[s] of the Bhagavad Gita: do you find it helpful? Question 638 Reflection Paper
Reflection Paper due tomorrow 10:00 p.m (so you have 24 hours). You will find in attached a sample of a reflection paper about a random article, so that you have an idea of how it works (format: a summary of the article at the beginning, then analysis, then opinion, and at the end you ask some questions I think). Find in attached the article that you have to read and make a reflection paper on it (2 full pages): “The Enuma Elish”
Question 639 Reflection Paper
hat myths are you familiar with? What are some modern myths? What myths affect/impact your life? (Now if you choose to answer one of these, make sure you understand what we mean by “myth!” It does not mean a fairy tale like the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. You need to make sure you read the chapter and understand that. If you write your paper and talk about a fairy tale as a myth, you will not get a good grade.) What role does the Bible play in Christianity? What is your story??? What role does art play in your religious life? Is it possible to evaluate a religious myth? Is it possible to determine the veracity/truthfulness of a religious myth? Why/why not? How?
Question 640 Spiritual and Religious journey
You are asked to write about yourself in this first paper. It is about your spiritual or religious journey. You are free to compose a paper that chronicles your path on a particular religion. If you are not an adherent (follower) to any belief then you may want to discover why you or your family does not practice a specific religion? If you have converted from one belief to another you can talk about that. Some of you may have had a specific event, an epiphany that caused a stirring of some kind of spirituality. A few of my students have given birth, been in horrific accidents, had near death experiences, and hauntings/visitations from the other side. Others of you may have found a focus of life in athletic competition. You can be creative and interview family members on why your family practices or does not practice a belief system. The key to this exercise is that you not plagiarize any work and that you accomplish ½ of the writing needed for this course. I have went to a catholic school my whole life and have went of a spiritual retreat my Junior year of highschool.

Question 641 Response to a Friend
God’s faithfulness is a constant theme throughout the Bible. It is in his faithfulness that we ground our hope. Yet suffering is a present reality for us. How do we explain God’s goodness and faithfulness in view of the pain and hurt that we experience in this life? Consider the following scenario: Imagine that you have an opportunity to address this issue with someone who is going through a serious season of suffering. Perhaps they themselves are suffering with a critical illness, permanent disability, financial loss, injustice, or a broken relationship. Or perhaps they are suffering along with a loved one who is going through a particularly difficult time. Knowing that you are a believer, they ask you about the goodness of God. Does God really care? Is he really good and faithful? How can it be that an all-powerful, loving, compassionate, and gracious God could allow such suffering when it is in his power to stop it? And doesn’t this God also cause suffering and death at times? How can we trust such a God? Is there any reason to have hope?

There has been an ongoing dispute between science and religion, however, lately, the two have attempted to work together to solve world issues. Which side are you on, or do you agree with this union? Please include at least 3 supporting arguments.
Question 644 Cultural christianity
From the time of the Roman Empire, Christianity has identified in some fashion with culture. But that can pose a danger. De Gruchy, 63, for example, talks about this as a form of “cultural Christianity,” in which Christianity can be “reduced to middle-class morality…incapable of responding to the eschatological apocalypse unfolding (62).” This, in turn, has the potential of creating a “kairos moment” (see xxiii and 41). Do we live in such a time and is there a potential that the use of religion can become dangerous? Use The Atlantic article, “How Religion Made a Global Comeback in 2017” as a basis for your response.

Question 648 religion discusion
In the previous 2 weeks you’ve read about seemingly parallel visions of Joseph Smith and Handsome Lake creating 2 different world views and the internal Christian battle over interpreting Christ for 2 warring sides. What role does human interpretation of religious visions, texts, and situations play in the eventual actions of the interpreters/followers? How did history play out these interpretations? If you’d like to tie today’s schism in (mis)understanding between Americans in “the South” versus “the North,” you may use a couple of sentences to speculate on the continuity of the past in the readings and the conflict within the “Christian community” today in your last paragraph. Most of your submission should be your point about the readings and NOT a long diatribe of opinion about current affairs. Your observation should tie directly to the reading.

Question 650 Acts Flow Chart
Instructions: Complete this assignment as you read the book of Acts during this term, and submit it in Module 8. For each chapter of Acts, provide a title followed by one significant verse from that chapter that supports the title, and then list the three most significant events or elements in each chapter. Be sure that the title for each chapter captures the primary events of the chapter. Be clear and specific. The title will be created by putting each chapter’s content into a single sentence and then narrowing it to a title, such as “Stephen’s Message before the Sanhedrin Leads to His Martyrdom” for chapter 7 or “The Jerusalem Council Concludes that Salvation is Apart from Circumcision and Moses’ Law” for chapter 15. Following the title, write out one significant verse from that chapter that supports the title. It’s not enough to give a verse reference; write out the entire verse, then give the reference in parentheses following the verse. Finally, list three most significant events or elements in each chapter. Avoid the temptation to copy the titles that you may find in your copy of the Bible. Copying will be of no value to you in knowing more of the book of Acts, and will become evident to the teacher as these titles are usually consistent throughout Bible versions. These titles will only come to you if you read the Scriptures for comprehension. Template: Arabic numeral: chapter title Verse: significant verse Minuscule letters: most significant events/elements

Question 653 BIOGRAPHY INSTRUCTIONS
Option 1: Ian Johnston (it is his translation of The Bacchae used in this lesson) offers a short interpretive summary of the play. Read this summary, here: An Introductory Note to Euripides Bacchae. Johnston suggests two alternative interpretations: “A more sophisticated (and certainly more interesting) version of … the play looks at Dionysus, not simply as a foreign god, but as the embodiment of certain aspects of human experience, as a symbol for the irrational, communal excitement, bonding, power, joy, intoxication, and excess which all too often get lost in the careful life of the city, governed by habit, rules, laws, and responsibilities. This approach to the play stresses the fact that Thebes has lost touch with those irrational energizing unconscious powers of life and, in Agave’s and Pentheus’ refusal to acknowledge the divinity of Dionysus, created a situation where these powers (which cannot be forever denied) simply break out with disastrous consequences. If that doesn’t carry an explicit moral, at least it serves as a cautionary tale.” [on the other hand] ” … it is not difficult to see why some interpreters have viewed this play as an indictment of religion because of its hostility to the survival of the community, on the ground that religion (as depicted by Dionysus and his followers) is the basis for the irrational destructiveness which threatens and ultimately overthrows the well-ordered city in an orgy of cruel excess. On this view, the play is a cautionary tale about the dangers of religious superstitions.” Question: With which of these interpretations do you tend to agree? Why? Need we choose between the two? Develop your answer in a crafted reply of around 500 words, and post to your group discussion page for this lesson. Be sure to draw on evidence in the text in developing your answer. http://records.viu.ca/~johnstoi/euripides/Bacchae_Introduction.htm

Question 655 Church History in Plain Language
Bruce Shelley, in Church History in Plain Language, states that one of the outcomes of the Age of Reason and its negative work was a loss of Christianity’s central place in Western Culture, which has continued into modern times (2008, p. 319). He then asks 2 important questions: How far can believers go in trying, as citizens, to get the State to impose Christian standards of conduct? If Christians give up the idea of enforcing Christian behavior, then what norm of conduct should they, as citizens, try to make an obligation for everyone? Please answer the questions that Shelley poses and discuss how this relates to the beginning of the Age of Progress. Question 706 AN ETHICAL DILEMMA
So you’re cruising in the car one sunny Saturday when the friend in the seat beside you suddenly says, “Did you see that article in the paper?” You immediately know which article. The one about the crime at the plant in India. “Well,” your friend confides, “that was us.” Your friend then spills a full confession. What do you do?”. . . Here is the article: Chapter 1 of an environmental whodunit. The Other India Incident! Cyanide Caper. Over 500,000 dead fish are found bobbing like bathtub ducks on the gray waters of the Ganges River. The city is shocked. Why did these fish meet their maker? And who would have guessed there were really fish in the river? An investigation begins. Meanwhile… A Saturday morning. Kate Koenig and Cheryl Emrich are driving to the official office party. They are both single, in their late 20’s, women in the male domain of hazardous-waste treatment. They have bonded. As they drive, Emrich, the environmental manager at the overseas office of P & H Plating Co. in Bhopal India, stuns Koenig by detailing events leading up to the fish kill. It started with a tank of cadmium and cyanide solution at the P & H plant on the Ganges. Instructed by her boss and boyfriend, Jeffrey Pytlarz, Emrich ordered a young worker to dump the solution down a floor drain. Koenig knew about companies that engage in bleeding, allowing pollutants to trickle into the sewers in such small amounts that they are hard to detect. This was worse. The P & H worker opened the tank valve wide. Within a couple of hours, 40,000 gallons of poison were riding toward the river. Soon after, workers at the Bhopal Municipal Corporation would notice something ominous in one of the sewage treatment plants: Bacteria used to decontaminate the sewage was dying. Tests showed that the villains were cadmium and cyanide. The plant, however, wasn’t designed to remove those particular toxins, so the water district opened the gates, letting them flow into the Ganges River. Before long, more than 500,000 dead fish belonging to 25 species were floating through town. Hmm, said the investigators. Cadmium and cyanide. Sounds like materials used at a metal finishing plant. But which one? Sitting in the car that Saturday, Koenig held the answer. “I said, ‘Why did you do it?’ “Koenig recalls. “She said, ‘Everybody else does it.” It really weighed heavy on me, to know that someone had the attitude that, ‘We’ll never get caught.’ ” On the following Monday, Koenig told a co-worker. He insisted she report it. She balked. “Cheryl will never speak to me again.” He picked up the phone, dialed the Indian authorities and handed her the receiver. —-Certainly an ethical dilemma DIRECTIONS: Use these questions to compose an analysis of this case and include a discussion of the ethical dilemma, possible solutions and the viewpoint of the stakeholders, considering the culture of the foreign site. Assume that there is no official regulation on water pollution that is being enforced in Bhopal with regards to the Ganges River. There is also a case that occured in Bhopal with regards to gas escaping and killing people which was caused by the corporation Union Carbide (now Dow Chemical.) There is a question at the end asking what happens if this is people who are killed. That happened in 1984 and there are still legal and ethical ramifications today. 1) What are the relevant facts in this matter? 2) Identify and define the ethical problem. 3) Who are the stakeholders in the decision and how will they be affected? Discuss the different viewpoints of these stakeholders and how they should participate in the resolution of this case. 4) What values can be brought to the decision and what standards can be used to come to a decision in the matter? 6) What ethical or other options do you think are available to resolve this dilemma? Is mediation or arbitration possible? 7) Which options are the most compelling? Why? 8) How would you resolve the dilemma? 9) How can this be analyzed in the context of the culture of the people of India and how would that factor into the handling of this case. 10) What values did you rely on to make your decision and do they consider the culture and people of India? Briefly discuss how your answers would change if there were also a massive loss of human life – numbering in the thousands. Many people were also killed or were very sick and there have been numerous disorders of both a neurological and psychological nature; there are also birth defects in future generations as a result of this intentional spill. In addition, the soil and ground water near the plant is contaminated many years later and cannot be treated or fixed.

Question 721 Producing and interpreting descriptive statistics
Producing and Interpreting Descriptive Statistics Activity Instruction For this practical application assignment, you will download five years of daily adjusted closing price and volume data from Yahoo Finance (or another site of your choosing) and perform a descriptive analysis. You will be using this data for four modules in this course. Go to Yahoo! Finance, linked in Resources. Find a stock beginning with the first letter of your last name. For example, if your last name begins with F, you might choose Ford. Search your chosen stock. When you find it, click on the Historical Data tab to access historical stock price. Gather five years of daily adjusted stock price data by selecting the appropriate dates through the Time Period link. Be sure the end date includes days in this course. Click on the Download Data link to save the data to your computer. The file will be saved so that it can be opened in Excel. Conduct a descriptive analysis by doing (at a minimum) the following: Calculate the mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation of the adjusted daily closing price for this stock. Interpret these statistics and discuss their relevance. Is the mode useful? Why or why not? Produce a histogram for the adjusted daily closing price. Be sure you have enough bins, so that you can see the shape of the data. Describe the shape of the data. What does this tell you about the stock? Produce a boxplot for the adjusted daily closing price. Interpret it. Note: this may be problematic for some of you who are using Excel. You may produce it manually if you cannot generate it automatically. Produce a time plot (scatter plot) of the closing date versus the stock price. How has the stock trended over time? Are there patterns? Summarize what descriptive analysis revealed about the adjusted daily closing stock price. Assignment Submission You must submit two documents. First, you must compile all of your answers in a Microsoft Word file, pasting in the tables and graphics you created to demonstrate your work (submitted as a .docx file). Second, you must upload the raw data (as a .csv file) that you used to do your analysis for the purposes of instructor replication. Failure to upload the second file will result in a score of zero on the assignment until the file is submitted. Assignments must be submitted to the assignments area for grading. Work e-mailed or otherwise presented cannot be graded in accordance with Capella grading standards. Because of the nature of statistics-based assignments, your instructor cannot give feedback on drafts of your work. Instead, if you have questions as you complete assignments, you are encouraged to attend the weekly supplementary instruction sessions or to consult the archived sessions for suggestions. Refer to the scoring guide prior to submission to ensure you meet all evaluation criteria. ***my letter is P***

Question 732 Negotiation
For this assignment, you must create a thread in order to view other threads in this forum. One thing to notice with Distributive Bargaining is that both parties want to maximize their share of the resources. It’s competitive; distributive bargaining is basically a competition over who is going to get the most of a limited resource. The example the book uses is on condo purchasing/selling; but while you are reading the chapter you could think of other examples where the strategies and tactics are the same; for example car buying. For this assignment; create a thread where you answer the following questions: 1) Why is managing the other party’s impressions important? What tactics can be used to do this? Which tactic do you think is most effective and why? (If you have had any of these tactics used on you or if you have used them yourself, feel free to expand on those examples) 2) On Page 51 the book gives 5 tactics for closing the deal. Give a separate example for each of these regarding when it would be best to use each of these tactics when closing a deal( think outside the box, it does not always have to be during a sale/purchase) 3) Finally, which of the “Typical Hardball Tactics” do you think is the most effective and why? 4) Comment on at least 2 other student posts.
Question 733 Business
Week 2: All written work must be in APA Using Multiple reference and citations Before doing the work for this week 2, please, read carefully the following chapters. Chapter 3: Strategy and Tactics of Integrative Negotiation. Questions: 1.. Define the differences between Distributive Bargaining and Integrative Negotiation by using an example. 2. One party’s work organization, based on Washington, D.C., has recently begun a project in Wichita, Kansas. The project will require fifteen to twenty employees to travel to Kansas and spend, on average, three weeks in residence there. It is expected that the project will span a period of nine months to completion. This first party has located an apartment complex nearby the location where the project work will be done. The apartment complex has traditionally required maximum lease terms of one year but does have a few vacancies. The organization desires to have its people in this apartment complex rather than in hotels. Questions How would you identify and rank the interests and goals of each party? What common ground can you find between the parties? What strategy would you use as the organization´s representative? What strategy would you use as the apartment complex representative? 3. Two romantic partners have decided to tie the knot. One has spent a great number of years in a very financially lucrative career and has substantial net worth and positive cash flow. The other has spent an equal number of years working hard as a dedicated teacher and has paltry savings and little extra regular cash flow. Both desire to agree on how living expenses will be shared, how things will be divided and organized upon the unlikely event that they separate or one experiences an untimely death. What each party´s overall strategy might be. All written work must be in APA Using Multiple reference and citations (more than three including textbook) ESSENTIALS OF NEGOTIATION, 5e Llewicki, Barry & Sanders.

Question 738 Negotiation Week Three
Written Assignment 3 Read Chapter 8 and prepare an essay (APA Format) of no less than 2 pages long or 600 words citing and describing some of the consequences of: “Unethical conduct” during a negotiation. You may cite your textbook, but it is a requirement that you enhance your homework assignment with additional research. Hint: Use the Electronic FNU/Library it is a requirement (cite two sources). Overview In this chapter, we turn to power’s complement, influence—the actual strategies and messages that individuals deploy to bring about desired attitudinal or behavioral change. During negotiations, actors frequently need to convince the other party that they have offered something of value, their offer is reasonable, and they cannot offer more. Negotiators may also want to alter the other party’s beliefs about the importance of his own objectives and convince him that his concessions are not as valuable as he first believed. Negotiators may portray themselves as likable people who should be treated decently. All these efforts are designed to use information, as well as the qualities of the sender and receiver of that information, to adjust the other party’s positions, perceptions, and opinions; we call this group of tactics influence. Learning Objectives 1. Two routes to influence – an organizing model. 2. The central route to influence – the message and its delivery. 3. Peripheral routes to influence. 4. The role of receivers – targets of influence. Textbook: ESSENTIALS OF NEGOTIATION, 5edition no less than 600 words and multiple citations.

Question 741A Passion for Science
Overview When people present their ideas in an authoritative manner, it is easy to assume that they have the experience, skills and education for us to trust their expertise. But how can we know which “expert” to trust? In your position on the Workplace Culture Committee, you can help your peers recognize whether applications of certain theories are based in science or not. In this Project, you will examine two talks on the subject of motivation, then look into some uses of motivational theories that are promoted by different kinds of experts. Directions Your efforts on the Workplace Culture Committee include helping your colleagues become informed consumers, not just of products, but of ideas. Prepare a handout on evaluating scientific claims on a topic of interest both at home and at work: motivation. Your handout should contain: a summary of the main ideas of each video a list of the parts of each video that are presented as scientific claims or proposed behaviors based on scientific theory an explanation, in your own words, of which claims show appropriate scientific support, which do not, and how you can tell. Base your explanation on the resources on evaluating scientific claims. You may find it useful to develop your draft content in a table, spreadsheet or simple text document before you create your handout design. Your handout may include graphics or other elements that you feel would appeal to your audience. When you quote a resource or use a graphic that you did not create yourself, be sure to cite it properly. Question 746 Embellished Resume
You are the ethics officer at Friendly Digits, a respected and profitable social media company in Colossal Corporation’s technology group. Friday morning, you arrive at your office to find you’ve received a voicemail from Ernst Blofeld. Blofeld has been a vice president at Friendly Digits for several years, and was recently considered for promotion to a senior vice president position. Ultimately, the promotion was awarded to another long term employee, Tara King. You find it difficult to make out some of Blofeld’s message. The words are occasionally slurred, as though he may have had a little too much to drink. I’m in Palm Springs for a conference, he explains, and I ran into a nice couple here at the hotel bar. You’d never believe it, but they’re old friends of Tara’s from school. I told them about her promotion, and they said she never finished her degree. She dropped out of the MBA program they all attended, and they never saw her again. You have to get to HR to check this out for me. You check Friendly Digits policy manual, which states that potential employees must submit transcripts for all degrees listed on their resumes. But this requirement was not in place 10 years ago when Tara King was hired. King has received excellent performance evaluations during her time at Friendly Digits, and her leadership has led to increased revenue and positive press for the company. Her record of success is what led to her promotion. After a brief consultation with Mindy Wu, the director of human resources, you telephone King. Based on current HR policy, we’re asking all employees who don’t have official transcripts on file, to submit them to the human resources department. There is a silence at King’s end, then in a shaky voice, she tells you that she does not in fact have an MBA. I was 12 credits away from completing my degree, she says, but then my dad got sick and I had to drop out. I really needed a job to support my family. I put the MBA on my resume because I hoped it would help me get hired. I always intended to go back to school, but I never did. It was a really stressful time. You tell King that you need a little time to think about the situation. You promise to call her back as soon as possible. You know that an MBA was not a requirement for the assistant project specialist job King was hired for 10 years ago. But four years ago, it was made a requirement for the senior vice president position she holds now. Two of the current senior vice presidents do not have MBA degrees, because they were promoted before this requirement was in place. Mindy Wu has asked you to write a memo with your recommendations on how human resources should handle this issue. King has a record of excellence with Friendly Digits, and her superiors would be unhappy to lose her. Step 1: Ethical Analysis The ethical aspects of King’s situation seem complex, and you realize that you need a structured way to think through the various possibilities and their implications. You know that there are many different schools of ethical thought and a variety of frameworks or approaches for analyzing ethical problems, but you decide that the best approach to this particular situation is Badaracco’s Right vs. Right Framework. Work through the Badaracco ethical analysis, considering the various options for action and the winners and losers for each option. What are your recommendations for the best ethical course of action? When you’ve finished analyzing the ethical aspects of this case, continue to the next step, in which you’ll consider any legal issues that could affect your decisions. Step 2: Legal Analysis In addition to the ethical aspects of King’s situation, there may be legal implications that the human resources department needs to account for before moving forward with any plan of action. You realize that you need to review any relevant information about fraud that might affect what could or should be done about King, including employment at will. Now that you’ve worked through possible legal implications and arrived at a recommended course of action for Friendly Digits’s HR department, it’s time to present your analyses, recommendations, and action plan in a memo to Mindy Wu, the director of HR. Step 3: Write Your Memo First, review how to write a memo. Once you have a sense of memos in general, use your outline and research notes to prepare your memo. Be sure to meet the following requirements: • Using the Badaracco framework and your legal analysis, prepare a memo for HR. • Format your memo following the library’s example. You must also include APA-formatted in-text citations and an APA-formatted reference list (do not format the body of the memo using APA style, just the reference list). See references and citations for details. • Include a specific recommendation on what actions, if any, HR should take based on your analysis and conclusions. • The memo should be no more than 10 pages (double spaced, 12-point font; the reference list does not count towards page limit). • Title your file using this protocol: yourlastname_King_date.

Question 747 Making Decisions that are Legal and Ethi
Step 5: A week has passed since you first spoke to the VP, and you now have one case review under your belt. Feeling a bit more confident, you open The White Arch Casino case file, already thinking ahead about the memo you will write for the VP. In the next step, you will gather the information you need to write the memo. Step 6: After reading the file, you realize that in order to formulate a sound response to the VP’s questions, you will need to review a number of specific foundational issues involving legal contracts, including the following: • What laws govern contracts? • What are the elements of a legal contract? • What form can or must a contract take? • Can a contract be modified? • What are the methods of discharging a contract? • Find answers to these questions about contract formation and execution and also look into possible contract remedies for when a breach of contract occurs. As you read, be sure to record your thoughts pertaining to the case and note the places in the readings that prompted your thoughts. After you have refreshed your understanding of contract law generally, you should supplement that understanding by doing legal research on specific laws related to contracts in Nevada and Delaware. Again, make sure to take notes as you read. Good notes will help you write your memo. Step 7: You are concerned about the question of Sal Pending’s role in this situation with Enoch Thompson. More specifically, you wonder whether Pending had the authority to make the promise he made (or any promises) to Thompson. Review the legal responsibilities of agents and employees to help formulate your answer. You should also review ethical business decision making, as it pertains to keeping promises in business situations. In the next step, you will use what you have learned to create an outline that will prepare you to write the memo. Step 8: You’ve finished your research. You’ve reflected on how the facts and the law come together in this situation. You’ve analyzed the possible arguments and determined which seem most reasonable, all things considered. Now it is time to formulate them, making sure to address all the concerns that your VP expressed to you when you met. Outline the memo that you will draft for your VP. Review your outline to make certain it covers all relevant points and progresses in a logical order. After you finish your outline, if you have time, give yourself one night of sleep before you begin the next step, in which you will write the memo. Fresh eyes might help you see points that need revision Step 9: First, review how to write a memo. Once you have a sense of memos in general, use your outline and research notes to prepare your memo for the VP. Be sure to meet the following requirements: Format your memo including APA-formatted in-text citations and an APA-formatted reference list (do not format the body of the memo using APA style, just the reference list). See references and citations for details. Include a specific recommendation on what action, if any, the VP should take based on your analysis and conclusions. Support your conclusion with references to legal principles and laws. The memo should be no more than 10 pages (double spaced, 12-point font; the reference list does not count towards page limit). Title your file using this protocol: yourlastname_WhiteArchCasinoMemo_date. You should try to have your White Arch Casino memo complete by the end of Week 3. In the next step, you will begin work on the final case from the VP: Big Brain Solutions Step 10: You have made recommendations on two cases so far and have one more case to go. After setting aside a few hours to work, you open the Big Brain Solutions case file. In the next step, you will gather the information you need to write a memo for the VP about this case. Step 11: While you have some general awareness of the fact that there are means of alternative dispute resolution, you realize that you need to know a lot more about this subject before you can attempt to respond to the VP’s questions. Some of the topics you should review include the following: • What general procedures or rules govern a typical arbitration proceeding? • Can a company force an employee to use arbitration (instead of a lawsuit) to settle an employment-related dispute because of a contract provision? • Are there times when an arbitration clause might be invalid or unenforceable against an employee? • What effect do claims based on specific federal or state laws have on arbitration provisions in employment contracts? Based on the answers to the above questions and your review of the employment law material, what will the likely outcome be in Liz’s case? In Ralph’s? In the next step, you will use the information gathered in this step to create an outline that will prepare you to write the memo. Step 12: You’ve finished your research. You’ve reflected on how the facts and the law come together in this situation. You’ve analyzed the possible arguments and determined reasonable conclusions to the questions you’ve asked yourself. Now it’s time to outline your memo. Review your outline to make certain it covers all relevant points and progresses in a logical order. Identify the major points you want to make and be sure that you have adequately covered all the relevant arguments or reasons needed to support them. In the next step, you will use your outline to create a memo for the VP. Step 13: Using your outline and research notes, write a memo for the VP. Be sure to meet the following requirements: Format your memo following the example linked above, including APA-formatted in-text citations and an APA-formatted reference list (do not format the body of the memo using APA style, just the reference list). See references and citations for details. Include a specific recommendation on what action, if any, the VP should take based on your analysis and conclusions. Support your conclusion with references to legal principles and laws. The memo should be no more than 10 pages (double spaced, 12-point font; the reference list does not count towards page limit).
